Question:

Can I apply for US Citizenship while waiting for my green card?

I'm currently waiting for my new Green card to arrive (2-yrs conditions of marriage being met). It seems that by the time I get it, based on the uscis processing schedule, I would have met the 3yrs residency requirement for citizenship. Can I concurrently have 2 applications processed? Anyone in my situation? Thanks!

  1. It is too early to apply for citizenship.  You must have your permanent green card (which you do not have yet) and have been here for 3 years from the time you were approved for your conditional green card.  You have about another year to wait.

  2. I don't believe that you can apply for US citizenship while waiting for your green card. After 4 or 5 accumulative years (if I'm not mistaken) of residency then that's the time you can apply for US citizenship.

  3. Once you have been a permanent resident married to a U.S. citizen for 3 years, you are eligible to become a U.S. citizen. Calculate from the date you first became a conditional resident and add three years. That's the start date of your eligiblity.

You could submit Form N-400 90 days before that anniversary date that you calculated above.
