Can I archive groups of messages to my hard drive or CD?

I would like to save a number of old messages either in a folder on my hard drive or copy to a CD or DVD. Is this possible? How?

if you're the owner you can. they call it backing up your group and there's a few programs that'll do this. pgoffline is one
