I borrowed my boyfriends car and was stopped at the border because the car is American and I am Canadian. The border guards didn't know whether I was allowed to drive it legally in Canada or not. Does anyone know?

  1. No, you can't drive it.  There is an odd Canadian rule that says that a Canadian Can't drive foreign insured vehicles, nor cross the border with them.  The rules generally only allow visitors to drive their own foreign insured vehicle.  Probably that way it makes sure you don't try buy your insurance across the boarder.

  2. A Canadian Citizen can drive a US Car into Canada provided he/she has a

USA Green Card to prove that they are

    Permanent Residents of the USA,

    Otherwise - no.

  3. You can not drive legally into Canada with your boyfriends car, if you manage to get across the border with out a hassle then you will not be insured, so if anything happens your boyfriend will be liable for all costs and damages, and if his insurance is anything like my step sisters(she lives in Boston), she is the only authorized driver on the insurance policy, so a non resident of the state/country can not drive the car.

  4. Yes, the insurance rules are that a car can be used casually for a short period of time by individuals different from the holder of the insurance.

Also, this issurance covers the period of time that you go from the US to Canada. yes, you are covered.
