Can I back up my DirecTV HD-DVR?

I have a DirecTV HD-DVR (an HR-10). It is getting full, and I'm wondering if i can back it up somehow. I see a USB port as well as a SATA port. I plugged in a USB hard drive, but the HD-DVR didn't seem to recognize it. Can I use a SATA hard drive? And if so, do I need to do anything to get the unit to 'recognize' it, or will it do so automatically?

There isn't really a good way to back up the recorded programs on an external drive. The best thing to do would be to use a VCR or DVD burner.

The best way to do it will be with a DVDR using the video, Svideo, or even componet in's and out's. Depending on the connections you have for each.

Problem - you will not be able to keep the HD format though. You will need a HD or Blu-Ray Recorder. Those aren't available yet. So the best you can do is record them to standard DVD.

Well the USB port on you box was for futue use only. suddenly this Tivo based rcvr stopped being provided by Directv now they are being updates for new features the only way that you do so is by recording on your vcr and dvd.

How to record here you have:

Recommended cables: Composite AV cables (red, white, yellow) to connect the reciever to VCR or DVD recorder.

Run the AV cables from output on the box to the input on the back of the VCR or DVD recorder

to record, Tune TV to the input the VCR or DVD recorder is hooked up to.

Tune VCR or DVD recorder to the input the IRD is hooked up to,If recording from an HD receiver, change the output resolution to 480i before recording DIRECTV (TiVo) DVR:

DIRECTV Central (Menu).

Now Playing List.

Select the desired program.

Save To VCR.

Start Saving From the Beginning.

Press record on the VCR or DVD recorde
