I'm going to do a project with bakeable clay, I might be using Elmer's glue to stick my pieces together. Will it be okay to bake?

  1. No. Elmer's glue is casein glue, a protein product.

The heat of a kiln will destroy, (oxidize), it.

You might bake the parts first and glue them up later.

But why not let the clay do the bonding before baking?

  2. Use a little water to make the pieces of clay stick together. No glue in the oven , after it has cooled you can , but not before ;)))

  3. If you're using "bakeable" clay, I assume you're using polymer clay, not an earth clay that needs to be fired at high temperature in a kiln.

There are various glues and other adhesives that are safe for polymer clay, and also effective to use with polymer clay, but which ones are best will depend on the specific pieces to be joined and whether they'll be baked with the clay.

Permanent "white glues" (like Elmer's GlueAll --but not it's washable "school" glue) and others are fine to bake at the temps used for curing polymer clays, but they won't really "hold most clay pieces together" well since those glues are primarily used for porous surfaces.

There are other adhesives and techniques you can use when joining pieces of polymer clay together though which will work quite well (...again, which ones to use will vary depending on whether the two pieces are raw, or baked + raw, or both baked).  Raw clay joined to raw clay seldom needs any glue at all btw except in certain situations.

There's a lot of info on joining pieces of clay together, as well as using various types of glues with polymer clay, on this page of my polymer clay "encyclopedia" if you want a lot more info on the subject:

  4. ditch the project and just bake some elmer's glue cupcakes
