Question:

Can I be added as a secondary driver on my girlfriend's policy in NY? If so what are the specifics?

Due to hardship, I'm unable to purchase a reliable vehicle of my own at this time. As a temporary fix (a few months maybe), me and my girlfriend have considered adding me as a secondary driver to her vehicle. (she works during the week, and myself mostly weekends) Is it possible for unmarried couples to share insurance? Or is that a perk reserved for married couples/families only? What are some particulars I should know about? Thanks in advance.

  1. She can add whoever she wants as an additional driver.  There may be additional charges depending on your driving record.

  2. Yes, you can be added.  She will need to call her agent and request that, giving them your information.  They will look at your risk factor, and it could lead to an increase in her premium to add you of course.  They will look at your driving record, and even your credit rating to establish your risk.

You won't know until you try as to what the costs will be, so call the agent and find out.

  3. she can add you no problem there.  the problem comes in if you have any points on your record as this will increase her rates.  the other thing is that if you drive her car and have an accident, then HER insurance will have to pay the claim and it will also increase her premium.  do you live with her?  if you don't and you live in a household where there are no autos you can purchase a non owners policy to cover you to drive until you purchase a car.  if you DO live with her she needs to add you to her policy anyway as most companies require all drivers in the home to be on the policy.
