Question:

Can I be allergic to a kitten but not a cat?

I have three older cats (two is a year old and one is about three years old) and I've never had a problem with them messing with my allergies. During the ending of summer and early fall, I usually have hardly any allergies at all. My oldest cat had kittens about four weeks ago and it seems that my allergies and sinuses have been acting up ever since I've started getting around them. Could I possibly be allergic to only kittens but not older cats? I'm just wondering. I've researched this but never could find anything on it. I would appreciate someone to answer this for me if they could find anything out.

  1. No, that dosen't make sense.  You probably have seasonal allergies that are kicking in.  Allergies can change and come and go over time, so just because you haven't had seasonal allergies in the past doesn't mean you don't have them now.

  2. This happened to me! My Allergy doctor, I get allergy shots, told me that it is a different dander. So whatever cat she bred with has the dander that bothers your allergies. My doctor also said that some people are allergic to cats but over time build up immunity to them. So there is a chance that after time this will go away. Good Luck.

  3. Well maybe the cat she bred with is what you are allergic to.  It could be a different breed.  Like I have a ragdoll, she is a hairy little thing, I would assume her breed would cause more allergies then other ones.  Could that be the case?

  4. It's probably something other than the kittens that's triggering your allergies.

I have a few friends who are allergic to cats, and they've told me that kittens are actually **less** likely to set off their allergies than full-grown cats.

  5. in some ways yes. It's not that their kittens as such, it's just your more allergic to that cat. It's quite common to be allergic to some cats, but no all. It's to do with that particular cat's fur.

    hope this helps (:
