My girlfriend works for AT&T and is enrolled in their insurance plan. I just graduated from college, and have not started employment with my job yet. The insurance coverage I had with my parents is going to expire at the end of this month.

  1. Answer one is correct, shack ups aren't covered. Get married, make yourself a real married couple, and then you could be covered.

  2. I would like to recommend you possess as much information as you can before taking action, here is a good place for that purpose.http://insurance.online-frees.info/insur...

  3. Absolutely! Some companies do offer insurance cover for non-relative ones. If they does the clause then you may otherwise be her husband and you will get what you want.

  4. Read the policy.  They can differ greatly in coverage.

  5. you will need to call your benefits dept. every job has different rules regarding common law marriage (living together). its common however that you must be married to receive coverage under her plan,.

  6. It's amazing how fast people answer and don't necessarily answer correctly.  "Shack-ups" or as they're technically called "domestic partners" can count and usually only require 6 months of living together.

The question is why do you want to be on her plan?   Price it out (if they allow it) as if the company isn't contributing any or much to the second person it could cost more.  Group insurance costs more than an indiviudal policy so unless the company is contributing towards that portion then it may not be wise to be on the same plan.....unless you don't qualify.

So, the answer is check with AT&T and make sure she asks if "domestic partners" are covered.

...usually the burden of proof is that you're both at the same address...  There are no legal issues because you aren't married.  People who live together and aren't married are domestic partners....pretty much anyway.

  7. It would be very unlikely that your girlfriend's insurance can cover you unless you are officially domestic partners and the company covers domestic partners. Not all companies cover domestic partnerships, and those that do might only for specific offices of their company, not all locations. There are different rules on how to officially be a domestic partner. In CA, one must meet specific criteria specified in the Family Code and file a Declaration of Domestic Partnership.

If they cover domestic partnerships, it should be in the info the company gave your gf when she was hired. Or HR can help her.

It wouldn't be a good idea to lie about your situation for insurance. The insurance companies do look into insurance fraud and take action. You don't need some $300 an hour biglaw attorney in your face. That means you gotta hire your own. Believe me, this does happen.

Because of your age, unless you have pre-existing conditions, you should be able to get a cheap policy to tide you over until you get insurance through your job. Insurance companies love young healthy people and are trying very hard to sell policies to them. If you are "un-insurable", states have high-risk insurance pools administered through companies like Blue Cross, etc. Usually the info is online.

    Hope this helps.

  8. most likely not.  for those that state domestic partner, there are some legal issues to work out there.  as for bf/gf, this is usually not a criteria for inclusion on a health plan.  check with the benefit rep and ask to clarify.

  9. Like Insurance Pickle said, it depends on whether or not the group coverage can extend to domestic partners.  Everybody who is saying that there's definately no coverage may not be right.  I've come across group plans (I used to have one) that would allow coverage for domestic partners.  With the plan I had, I needed to verify the domestic partnership by providing the HR department with a copy of our lease with both of our names on it and an affidavit from our bank stating that we had a joint checking account.  It's worth looking into, your GF merely needs to contact her HR department.

If not, you can look into purchasing Short Term Medical Insurance, which is usually inexpensive because it's only designed to cover you for 6-12 months.  This can be purchased through many insurance agents and works well for somebody who is simply between jobs or are waiting for group benefits to be offered through their employer.

In most cases, group insurance is better than individual insurance (and I sell individual insurance) and is often less costly because most employers will contribute to the cost.

  10. That completely depends on the exact terms of her insurance plan. Some companies allow non-relatives to be covered, others do not. She needs to check with her HR department or read the literature they hand out about the company's benefits plans.

  11. Most insurance plans will not cover boyfriend/girlfriend, even if the two live together.  It should be outlined in the insurance policy statement.  Don't try and do this without first contacting her HR department because it's considered unethical and the employee responsible can almost certainly be terminated for it.  It's borderline (if not definitely) insurance fraud.  Not to mention it costs the company a lot of $$$, which the employee would likely pay back.

To echo what others have already said, throw a ring at her and your covered!

Have her contact her company HR staff for a definite answer.

  12. Put a ring on her finger and make her a wife and you can.

Shack Ups usually do not qualify.
