Can I beat butter without an electric mixer?

Instructions for a cake I'm making, says to beat butter until creamy, I researched this and found out I need to just mix it with an electric mixer. I can't find my electric mixer at the moment.. can I beat it any other way?

We used to just put cream in a cold jar and shake it.

Pretty easy.

You can beat your butter just using a wooden spoon or a whisk, but it'll take a long time and quite a bit of effort.  I'd keep looking for your mixer...
