Can I become a Social Worker with a Undergrad Psychology Degree? Or does It have to be Sociology? In BC?

  1. There are two paths into social work. You can either get a Batchelors in social work (3 yr) or you can do a 2 year Masters (doesn't matter what your degree is in).

    So for you, you will need to do a 2 year Masters. Most universities require a certain amount of relevant experience before taking the Masters, e.g. if you have worked/volunteered in a care home, or you have worked with children etc. You will generally need a lot of experience (full time over summer might suffice) but some universities will take you regardless.


  2. I have an undergrad degree in psych and went on for my masters in social work.  I don't know how you feel about more education...but the MSW is the way to go if you want to earn more money and there will be many more job opportunities.

  3. Not normally. Usually in order to be a social worker in Canada you need a degree in social work. That being said, they might hired someone with a psych degree if they also have addition work experience or clinical/practical counselling training.
