Question:

Can I become a journalist WITHOUT a journalism degree...?

I am 18 years old and about to go to Edinburgh University to study Philosophy and English Literature (joint honours). I am interested, however, in perhaps pursuing a career in journalism. Perhaps in a newspaper, perhaps a magazine, perhaps online- I haven't decided yet. I appreciate that it is a very competitive field--- do I stand any chance AT ALL if I am studying English lit + Philosophy rather than journalism...?

I mean... surely not EVERYONE writing for magazines and newspapers has a degree in journalism?

Thank you!

  2. Sure, but you'll have to be willing to start at the bottom and hustle.  Depends on how hard you plan to work towards it.

  3. I guess you can as long as you will show them that you got what it takes to become a journalist.  Show your passion and love for journalism. Why not just take journalism instead?

  4. It is definitely achievable.

You would need to build up a portfolio of work from things you have written for newspapers or magazines and you could show this to any potential employers.

You will also need to be prepared to go to lots of work experience placements to build up your skills, knowledge, reputation and understanding of the industry.

You will just have to start at the bottom and work your way up, but it can be done :)
