  1. Of course, Ive met officers that i couldn't understand not one bit because of their accent, a stutter shouldn't be a problem

  2. The only real requirement to become a cop is the ability to breathe and you really don't have to do that well.

Oh, and some departments still have minimum height requirements for males.

Why would you want to?  Do something constructive.  That is unless you like to be hated.

  3. Sure, as long as it wouldn't impede your ability to communicate with the public.  If it becomes worse when you get anxious, that might be a problem both in interviewing and training as well as any high-stress situations, like performing an arrest.

  4. nope i dont know

  5. Yes.  We have Officers in DC with Teret's as well as every speech impediment known to man.  Does it make it harder for them to do the job, sure, but the Americans with Disabilities Act protects your right to compete for the job equally with everyone else.  If its only a mild stutter, I wouldn't even worry about it.  One of the side effects of an adrenaline dump is it short circuits some language skills, so lots of officers get to either yelling or stuttering when they are in critical incidents until they get a few years under their belts.  We also have a ton of bi-lingual officers, come of whom can sometimes be EXTREMELY difficult to understand on the radio.

  6. You can do anything you desire, even if you stutter.  Check out www.stutteringhelp.org and look at the list of people in various careers who have done well for themselves.

If you wish to improve your speaking, try speech therapy or self therapy.

    Try these resources:

www.stutteringhelp.org  there are videos online that show speech therapists working with stutterers; watch them and learn some techniques.

Meet others who stutter here http://groups.myspace.com/stutteringfoun...

    stutteringchat on Yahoo groups

Contact The Stuttering Foundation of America as that is where our family got help. Their book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" worked wonders after working through it step by step.  Part of the book can be found here http://www.stutteringhelp.org/Default.as...

When you apply of a job, tell them you stutter but that you are working on improvement.  Take the Foundation's brochure for employers with you and give it to the interviewer.  Find it under "brochures" at www.stutteringhelp.org
