Can I belly dance after Scoliosis Surgery?

I have had the surgery when I was 12 and now I am 21 and I want to learn belly dancing. Will this affect me?

I have a cousin who does belly dancing, and teaches it. I'd be willing to bet you could do it well, and it might even be good for you. Ask your physician to be sure. Your specific case may need some special instructions. Then go have fun with it.

i got scoliosis surgery 9 months ago,and im now doing ballet hiphop jazz and ballroom.  done a bit of bellydancing

no biggy

itll be a bit hard at firt,but its more flexibility with your new spine anyway

but make sure you have had the operation for at least 3 months b4 attempting anything physical

Harrington rods haven't been used in the US for quite awhile so I doubt that she has them.

That being said, your fusion will keep you from being flexable so if you were fused in the lumbar area, you may not be physically able to move.  If you had a higher fusion, your hips should be able to move.  Your body will tell you if you shouldn't be doing an activity.

You can, but those Harrington rods will limit your mobility. On the other hand, a lot of the motion isn't in the spine itself, so you may be surprised how well you do.

In 1984, I was diagnosed with scoliosis, and had surgery shortly before I turned 14 (1985). My top curve was fused using stainless steel Harrington rods and bone chips from my hip.

Talk with your physician to see what's right for you, but mine have told me to do whatever I want and listen to my body when it says I am pushing it's limits. I did recreational belly dance for several years and still do yoga. With both, the fusion prevents some positions/moves, but both are doable in a modified fashion. They also help maintain or improve what flexibility you do have.
