Can I blame my ollie on my board?

Well I'm trying to learn to skateboard, and was riding this piece of c**p board my pops got for me when I was younger. I'm trying to master my stationary ollie first (I already can ride it, I was really comfortable with my board.) So I'm actually getting off the ground about 50% of the time. My friend who skates heavily tells me that it could be my board. So is it me or my board and if it is my board which brand would you suggest switching to?
