Question:

Can I blow up from this?? Car question - Fuel Pump.?

OK - my fuel pump is under my backseat - I have that taken out already, and I removed the three screws holding the plate with the wires to the pump. Underneath is the fuel pump, which needs to be replaced.

There is less than 1/4 tank of gas, the fuel pump lifts right up, the tank does not need to be dropped to access it.

If I remove the battery from the car, and do NOT smoke, is this safe? Alot of people are telling me it is fine as long as it has less than 1/4 tank - BUT - 1/4 tank of gas = about 4-5 GALLONS.

It only takes a small cup of gas to ignite a bonfire - I've done it.

And, it only takes a spark to ignite the vapors of the fuel once the pump is removed - I KNOW the mechanic will do this SAME THING - but he is advanced at it - But I think I can do it.

My question is: Can I SAFELY do this, if I take all necessary precautions? (IE: Remove battery, do not smoke, avoid static electricity)

SERIOUS AND LOGICAL ANSWERS ONLY, PEOPLE.

Thanks to those who try to help me in advance!

  1. You could probably do it fine, but if you are worried about it at all, you could just empty the tank a little more. Always better to be safe, right?

  2. Less fuel is not better than more fuel, the vaper is what makes a tank dangerous.

That said, you will be fine. The fact that you are concerned means you understand the risk involved.

Just make sure you have a container large enough to put the old pump in so it will not leak all over the inside of the vehicle.

Get the old one out and the new one in fairly quickly so the fumes don't have time saturate the air inside the car and you will be OK.

    Good Luck!

  3. You have made it this for ,so i thank you will be alright to finish the job, just remember to leave all the doors and windows open to keep the car vented.

  4. you should be ok,you might want to ground yourself to a negative on the car to stop static elect.

  5. You answered it yourself...

remove the battery, don't smoke, ground it to avoid static sparks. there's not really anything else that could cause it to ignite...

maybe also make sure there is no electrical equipment in the vicinity of any vapours.

if you're really worried, you could syphon out the fuel before proceeding.

seriously and logically, you're not going to blow up.

  6. You seem like a bright person, but unsure of doing the job yourself ,therefore I would advise against it. A few months from now you will not be thinking of the money you spent having it done, but the burn scars would be for life.

  7. Yes, you can safely do this. I have been a ASE Master Certified auto tech for almost 40 years. DO NOT USE any power or air tools around the fuel tank and be careful even with hand tools not to create any sparks and follow all safety precautions.

  8. disconect the negative terminal, dont smoke or produce sparks with tools, discharge any static electricity out side the vehicle or you can purchase and electronics grounding strap goes aound your wrist and has a lead that you connect to ground(its used in electronic repair places but i rarely use them unless you have some real cheap shoes that produce static electricity.also dont smoke around the blinker fluid its highly flamable.

  9. You can do it .Take care as you lift it out ,you will need to turn it slightly to get the float out;Don't take deep breaths, you will get a head ache.Open the windows an doors. You don't need to remove the battery, just disconnect the leads to the fuel pump first.Key OFF and OUT.
