First Great Western Intercity trains between London Paddington and Wales are fitted with passenger power sockets. Can I boil a 650W travel kettle using these sockets? I can't find any information as to the power rating of these sockets and I am worried in case I blow a fuse on the train. My Russel Hobbs travel kettle is rated 110-120/220-240v 60/50Hz 550-650W and is fitted with a 13A fuse.

  1. NO! The sockets are for laptops and mobile phones only. And the first answer about spillage is more than sensible. Just imagine what might happen if a sudden stop caused a kettle full of boiling water to spill all over you or another passenger. Either take a thermos or, if you want to heat baby food, ask the buffet car attendant to do it for you.

  2. The straight answer is yes.......But be it on your head if as sombody else said, that the train had to break hard and your kettle spills on a fellow passenger as you will be liable, and probably get sued...Then that will be the last time you will see power sockets on the UK trains!!!!

  3. Get in touch with GWI Customer Service and ask them.  It's their equipment your going to use, so they should have the specs.

Chances are they will strongly advise you NOT to use your pot, due to the possibility of burns if their is an incident with the train.
