Question:

Can I breed my female dwarf hamster again?

My female dwarf hamster just had a litter of 5 little pups and they were all healthy with perfect teeth and a shiny coat. I checked the mums and dads backgrounds with the breeder and they are perfectly healthy too. The pups are just over two weeks old today and I was wondering if i could breed my hamster again considering how healthy she, the dad and the babies turned out to be. Or should i wait for a while to give her a rest? Should i also wait because it might get overcrowded with pups? What do i do?

P.S.Don't waste your time with horrible answers please, they aren't welcome.

  1. You can mate the dwarf hamster many times..you should give it a rest and wait a month, so it gets used to her pups right now because if she has more now, then she wont even care about the ones she had first...trust me i did this before...I have a dwarf hamster and the same thing happened..but i had to wait because i saw what happened to my sisters hamster...she just left them there...

  2. You technically can just keep her breeding litter after litter, but this will greatly shorten her lifespan. It's best to wait about 3-4 months before you breed her again. This will give her body time to 'recuperate' and put her in a better condition come mating time. If you stick to this regime, it will mean that you will probably get 2 litters out of any one breeding female hamster as they often become sterile when they turn 14 months old. Sometimes you can get a third litter from a female but this is the exception rather than the rule. Strangely enough, this is the pattern that hamsters will adhere to even though they have 'free rein' as to how often they mate and produce offspring. 2-3 litters per breeding female is the norm for hamsters kept as mating pairs.

  3. Its always prefered to wait a while in between breeding. So u can let her rest and take care of the babies and stuff. And for many other reasons.there is always the possibility that the pair will mate again within a period as short as 24 hours after giving birth to a litter. Other pairs have been known not to mate again until the litter is weaned. So i would wait till the litter is weaned (prepared, just about full grown.etc.) Hope i helped!

  4. I would give her a rest but keep in mind that with every littler of pups she has shortens her lifespan

  5. Wait a while. Maybe the hamster wont breed again. Do not breed her with a different hamster though.

  6. Be really careful about this one. I would definitely leave her for a couple of months, just like women, she'll need time to get her body back to normal and for the pups to have been away from her for a while. The thing about this one is that if you're not careful, you'll shorten your hamster's lifespan considerably.
