Can I bring cat food into Germany? Also, can I bring other food items?

We are moving to Germany and our friend there has 2 cats who are addicted to American Cat Food. She wants us to bring her 6 boxes (24 cans each box) of fish and meat flavored cat food..is that illegal?

Also we want to bring Soy Nut butter (children's allergies..German Soy nutbutter is processed with real nuts) and cake mixes & things..

Anyone know exactly what is okay? Expecially what is okay to ship in our crate going by ship vs okay in the plane. Thanks!

P.S. German Consolate says nothing about cake mixes & nut butters, only says no poultry, meat & dairy.. not sure if that applies to cat food or not.

  1. It should be fine as long as you declare it beforehand. It will go through customs either way. It would have to be canned, and as such is usually acceptable. And things is ambiguous... remember you are allowed no vegetation and no poultry/ meat etc because it may contain diseases. Most processed food from a supermarket that has a long shelf life/ (ie canned food) that is from a recognised company especially.. is acceptable. I think you may encounter a little trouble since you are planning on bringing so much in... there may be a limit... (you may not bring enough for commercial selling etc without some sort of permission.) I reccommend calling customs and talking with them, as it would be awful to go all that way with all that expense, only for it to be denied.  Good luck

  2. not worry about it. you can find all american food itiems at any miltary post. plus you can order anything on line

  3. You should be ok with stuff that's still sealed in the can. In the worst case, you'll have to pay import VAT (16% of the declared value) and possibly duty (no idea) on it.

Doesn't surprise me that the consulate isn't any help - they're not customs experts. You might be able to find more information at http://zoll.de/english_version/index.htm...

  4. NO WAY!!!!!!!! THEY WILL KILL U FOR THAT! R U KIDDING ME!!!!! DO RESEACH BEFOR U MOVE!!!!!

  5. I would suggest you call the airport in Germany and ask them.

Coming back from the US to Canada the customs people wouldn't let me bring an apple back with me if I intended to go home to my farm with it (I packed a lunch for the trip and then didn't eat it). I told them I'd eat the damm thing right here if you want and they said  "and do it where I can see you".

Maybe the guy was going through a divorce or somthing - and I do hope the Dr. was able to take the pickle out of his butt hole .....Point being - check it out

  6. Am not on Germany.

  7. You need not worry about canned or dry goods.   You might just want to send a package and ship it.  These days airlines like to charge extra for luggage over a certain weight.

  8. Achtung!  Sie haben ein cat!  Roust!  Catfood sere gut!  Yah!  Ich bin ein cat!

  9. vee have vays of vinding out.

  10. no as long as it's canned or sealed you should be fine.

if you're moving with the military, like to hanau or something, they have a commissary there. you can buy American food. they even have a taco bell. all the bases in germany do

  11. We have perfectly good cat food (and human food) here in Europe. If you're not willing to adapt to native things here you should probably stay at home.
