I have a gable roof with an unknown low pitch, I want to add a knee wall 2 feet down from the ridge, but over a load bearing wall where the old rafters are supported. The wall needs to be 4 feet high to get the desired pitch for a 10 foot addition. The run is 24 ft and the width of the roof would be 24 ft.as well. Also, how would the new rafters be tied in to the outside wall, I'd like to have a three foot overhang as it faces west with a wall of windows, could the rafters just extend out for the overhang without a sofit? The top of the west wall is about 20 feet off the ground and the place is on the side of a steep hill so I can't get up there to the outside of the overhang.

  1. Metal is your best choice, good call there, as it is the lightest.

I assume you mean tying the rafters into the new outside wall on the addition. Metal rafter ties would be my choice.

Soffit is mostly for appearance sake, in my opinion, if you can make it look good and function without it, go for it.
