Question:

Can I burn wood in my back yard?

I am rebuilding my deck and have a lot of junk wood, no waste just wood.

I live in California.

A friend of mine told me to just burn it in a 50 gallon drum, which I have as a matter of fact, burn it in my back yard.

I can't find on the web anywhere that tells me the limitations of such.

Can any one tell me where to look? or maybe if it is okay to do such a thing.

Thanks

  1. ya check with your local fire deptment, codes vary from place to place

  2. well were i live you can but it has to be for cooking so as long as threes a screen on top of your drum to reduce the sparks and a pack of wieners your good to go but check with the local fire station they could tell you the ins and outs

  3. I do not know the laws there..but I know alot of cali is on fire..and when this happens and droughts also they ban all outside burning under these special conditions.....I would call the fire station to get the update on the present fire bans if any for your area/...If you burn while a ban is on due to these reasons the fine is extremely hefty..I burn alot of my stuff here in Florida in a 55 gallon barrel and we are allowed to with a screen over it..however if we are on total outside fire ban..they want to lock you under the jail

  4. First of all, is it treated wood and what is it treated with?  Do you really want to burn it?   Most of the western states have restrictions on burning during "fire season" which is now.  You may need a permit or you may not be allowed to burn outside at all.  You should contact your local fire department, state forestry department or US forest service, depending on who has jurisdiction.  If you don't, as one contributor said, you may end up under the jail.  Or, if a wildfire resulted you could  be responsible for all damages and suppression expenses.
