Can I buy a car under my own name and be covered under my parents insurance?

Question

I am currently a college student and considering in buying a car. It will be my first car and I have never had car insurance before. Therefore, my insurance would be really high if I just had insurance by myself as a first time driver. My question is if the car is titled under my name, can I somehow have my parents insure the car under their name and have them add me as a driver on their insurance even though I own the car? Is this legal and normal?

Some info: This is in the state of Nevada. I also live with them and they don't mind the liability.

This all depends on which insurance company that they have.

In most cases alot of your smaller insurance companies will not cover any damages for any persons other than who is listed on the policy. Now it does not matter who the car is titled to.

If you are looking for insurance, Geico is not the best, I would try to get in with USAA, State Farm or Allstate.  USAA is the best but you must be in the service in order to join. However you can get double the coverage for the same cost as minimal coverage of Geico or any competitors, plus they all offer discounts for students.

Now, you can get on your parents policy under a fleet plan, however they will have to make sure that the car is covered under the policy.  And if it lapses, then you will still get a ticket.

So make sure that they add you as a Single Driver of the vehicle if at all possible, and also make sure that you go for the college student discount.
