I'm planning to buy a car in NY but I don't have a Driver's license or a Learner's Permit. (I'm over 18) Could anyone tell me if it is possible to buy a car with a Learner's Permit and how long does it take to get one if I can pass the knowledge test in my first try? Thanks!!

  1. You'll have better luck trying to buy a car with cash, not with a learner's permit.

  2. I agree.  You should be able to purchase a car without a license, so long as you can get proof of insurance.  I think if you go to the RMV and pass the test they give you your learner's permit on the spot.

Yes you can.  I bought few motorcycle with a permit (in NYS). The registering of ANY motor vehicle should be about the same. I know that in NYS there's actually a separate forms for one person buying a car and another person registering the car.

BUT In your case, it would be largely moot because unlike a motorcycle, you would not be able to get insurance without a license (which also means you cannot get a registration without insurance - which means you cannot even drive it home).

Wait till you get your license.

    Good luck....
