Can I buy a car without my title present?

My dad gave me his car a long time ago but within the last month I finially put it in my name though the DMV. I have been waiting for the title to come in my name in the mail before I bought a new car, but my car is so bad right now I have no choice but to trade it in for a better one. It is registered in my name so can I still buy a car without having my title with me?

ps I live in NY if that makes a differnce with laws or anything.

Thanks so much!

  1. Sure, your registration shows that you have a clear title.

If the dealership runs a DMV report, it will show that a title is being generated. Just let them know that it has not been received yet. They will ask that you give them the title when you receive it.

  2. Contact your Local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) ask them First!!!

  3. You should be able to sign it away at the dealer without having the actual title as long as you are the sole owner with no lien.
