I will be traveling to Munich this summer, and want to use a german SIM card while I am there. While I can buy them in the US, they are horrendously expensive! I imagine they sell them at the airport, but I am not sure how I would find out. I will be flying into Munich, and I will need a GSM 1800MHz carrier (such as e-plus). Thanks!

  1. you can also try an automated vending machine if you arrive late

(they look like cigarette vending machines)

  2. Yes, I have bought SIM cards for various phones in Germany. Try the first phone shop you find and ask if they have it or know where you can get it, but you will most likely find the SIM card you need not at the airport but at the main train station. Head south out of the main train station. There are many phone shops along Bayerstrasse and south.

  3. Yes, you can buy prepaid SIM Cards in Germany at most mobile phone stores and places like T-Mobile, Vodafone, O2 and E-Plus shops.  They cost abput 10 Euros and include 10 Euros of talk time.  With Vodafone and T-Mobile you can buy cards in 15, 30 and higher Euro denominations.  Just make sure your phone is unlocked.  Otherwise the SIM card won't work, but you probably already know this.  Hope this helps.  You could also buy a cheap phone for about 30 Euros that also includes about 10 Euro talk time.

  4. I just bought a SIM-card here in Munich yesterday, for a friend who was here as a tourist!

There are mobile phone shops all over Munich, and on the Leopoldstr. near to the U-Bahn station Münchner Freiheit you can find shops of all providers.

To give you an idea of prices - we paid 20 Euros for the SIM card with telephone number, and it had 5 Euros credit on it. Then we bought 30 Euros worth of credit, and can now phone for 19 cents a minute anywhere in Germany, any time of the day, night or weekend. That was a deal from O2.

I wouldn't try to buy one at the airport - there are few shops right there, and they may well try to rip you off!!
