  2. Yes you can, I still have one I bought 3 years ago, Movistar, and every time I go back to Spain I use it.  I have to buy a new SIM card each time, though, because if you don't use the number for 6 months, it's automatically cancelled.  As far as calling cards, mentioned by another answerer, they're fine as long as you're going to have access to a private landline phone.  I tried using them with payphones, and it was impossible, because they seem to put payphones in the noisiest possible places (i.e. in the middle of busy intersections) or  else they just don't work.  There are also locoturios all over the place -- small stores where you can go in and use a phone in a small booth and then pay for it.  Just ask before using it what the charges are -- they can be quite illogical -- for example, when I was in Alicante, it cost more per minute to make a phone call to a spanish mobile phone number than it did to call the US or UK.

  3. Yes, any movistar or vodafone shop will be happy to sell you one at around 60 euros. Calling cards are cheaper for a short visit and work with almost any public or fixed line phone. Try my Madrid site for useful telephone numbers and tourist info: http://www.madrid-guide-spain.com You can also let me know how things worked out and I´ll be happy to include the info!
