Can I buy an overpowered amp but adjust it to not blow my speakers?

This way when I upgrade my speakers down the line I wont have to buy another amp. The speakers I have atm are 35 rms F, 40 rms R but they are only running off my head unit which only powers 20 rms to each.

I want to buy an amp that is lets say 80 watt rms so when I buy better speakers I won't have to get a new amp but I don't want to risk blowing my speakers. Can I just tune the gains down?

  1. I wouldn't bother turning down the gain. You have the perfect wattage at two times RMS. This helps ensure your amp won't clip and cause your speakers to blow.

Just make sure you listen carefully if you turn it up real loud. You don't want to push the speakers past their mechanical limits.

  2. yea, you can can either go very very easy on the gain setting or configure the final ohm load to be higher so your amp throws less rms power to them. and do not bridge the amp lol.
