Hi I have TimeWarner cable and just switched to their HD DVR cable for which I am charged about $10 a month to rent. I was listening to NPR and some guy mentioned that you shouldn't rent but purchase your own HD DVR cable box to save money. Is this possible? Is this one of those things the cable company doesn't mention to you..in their economic interest..but that is perfectly do-able??

If so any boxes that anyone out there can recommend??

Thanks

  1. I am looking for the same info.  Do the new DVR's with tuners work without/or in  place of cable box?  If there is no choice but to use the Time Warner DVR, what is the best way to store recordings off of the box once it is full?

  2. According to the FCC, YES.  As far as the cable company making it easy on you, fuggedaboutit.

But a comparable one from ebay, print the attached, go to the cable company office, and demand it be allowed...
