  2. Absolutely, but you need to make sure it is feasible for your home.  If you live in a place where wind is intermittent, and gusty, from different directions all the time, it won't work as well as other alternatives, perhaps solar or microhydro.  Also many communities are making rules/laws against wind towers in people's backyards.   There are lots of places to do research , see below

There are also often alternative energy consultants in the area who will help you determine what system is best for where you live and how much electric/ hot water/ heat you use.  Sometimes the local extension office can help you out, and some states offer grants to people who are trying to use alternative energy in their homes or businesses.  Try googling your state plus "alternative energy grants" to find out more.

Good luck!  We tried going without electricity for a few years, then had to go back on for our new baby and business reasons, but are now back off the grid for past 3 years.  It has been hard work, but so worth it.

  3. I would love to install a wind turbine for my home, but a lot of factors prevent me from doing so. You have to consider:

    1) The initial start-up cost. (it will take a few years to recoup the cost).

    2) How much wind your area receives.

    3) How much land you have.

    4) If your neighborhood restricts them. (this may fall under a height restriction for things you install).

    5) State and city regulations.

If you find a company that makes one you're interested in buying, they should be able to help you determine whether or not it will work for you.

  4. Idont know about buing one  but if you  wind copper wire around a tube and rotate a magnet on the inside using propeller blades you can generate electricity.

  5. First unless you want a large costly battery pack you will need to work with your electric utility company on getting a bi-directional meter that registers what you provide and what you use. Then you will need a minimal use battery pack to take care of your house in case the utility has line problems. There are some good ideas and tips on this site for third world users that cam be adapted.

  6. Yes, I bought my windmill plans from http://instantproducts.info and built the entire windmill in 1 afternoon. My electric bill went from 400 dollars a month to 40-50 dollars a month. Give it a try!

  7. I tried to find this out a couple years back. It was nearly impossible to gather info. What I did find was that you have to check local ordinances about building the structure. The tower has to be inspected every so often. If anything gets worn out you have to pay for the maintenance and repair which aren't cheap.
