I don't have a credit card and I don't know anyone with a credit card, so can I buy stuff with a debit card? (ex. CIBC?)

  1. Nope...you cannot. If you want to buy something on line you need  a credit card...if you don't have one or can't get one just get a pre-paid card like a Vanilla card (www.vanillamastercard.com) and away you go!

  2. Unfortunately the answer seems to have been confused by American and Canadian responses.

Many American debit cards are issued with the Visa/MasterCard logo and work in a way similar to their credit cards (which means that they can used on-line).  The Canadian CIBC debit card you have works on a different network called Interac.  At this time you cannot use your Interac debit card at amazon.ca.

Many on-line merchants now accept pay-pal which would allow you to use your chequing account on-line.

Here's the link to paypal shops:

Another option is Interac Online.  Here's the link to shops participating in that program:

Amazon.ca is not participating in either program.  Hopefully you can find what you're looking for at another online shop.  Someone else mentioned a pre-paid master card.  Watch out for the fee's on those...Good luck!

  3. Yes, I buy stuff all of the time with my debit card.  You can create an account with amazon.com and it will ask for your banking/debit information.  You can even use your checking account information to purchase things on amazon.

  4. Yes, as long as it's a true debit card, linked to your checking account, and with the Visa or MC logo on it. You'll need the card number, the expiration date, and the security code from the back of the card to make the purchase.

If it's only a cash card linked to your savings account, it won't work. Cash cards don't have the right sequence of numbers.
