Hi, I just moved into the house w/ no air conditioner in it. But I noticed previous renter made hole into the wall and put sleeve in it so that people can put in air conditioner in there. There is also opening(vent/ holes) toward the back.

My question is,.... can i buy air conditioner for window and install it in the wall?

Air conditioner for windows are a lot cheaper than one specifically made for wall... That is why I am asking about this.

Can anyone tell me what needs to be done when I buy this air conditioner?

Thank you!!

  1. yes be no difference then using window-unit will flow air over condenser to evaporate the water

  2. Since the previous occupant used it for this purpose, it's probably safe to assume that you can do it as well. Is the proper electrical outlet available? If not, you'll have to arrange for that.

Just be sure you buy one the correct size for the sleeve.

  3. Your unit needs an air intake and a place for condensate water to drain.  What you describe might work as long as the sleeve is correct.

  4. Wall units tend to be larger than window units.  Not only in btu's, but in size.  Window units are normally sized to cool that particular room... not several rooms.  So, if you are planning cooling the whole house... it won't be able to keep up.

Secondly... and this gets back to the size.... a typical wall is thicker than your average window... this is important to note, because of the depth size of the unit you plan to use.  Most window units have the intake vents for the condenser unit too close for use in a wall... they need to be outside the wall, not stuck in the wall cavity.  In a wall unit, those intake vents are farther away from the front of the unit, allowing for the wall thickness.

You could spend $100 on a window unit, but don't be surprised if it doesnt cool like it should.  ;)
