Can I call an agency and ask for them to tell me information about an ancestor on the census records?

  1. You'd be better off posting the information here and hope somebody picks up on it for 1930 and prior. More recent information--I've not tried it, but I understand the Census Bureau will do a look-up with proper form and fee.

You need to tap into the LDS church's geneological records.  That's supposed to be the #1 place in the world to get such records.  They use the records for church purposes but they are supposed to always be helpful for anyone who pops in to review records.  It's in SLC, UT but I'm pretty sure they have that stuff online for you to ask.  

    I went there in the 1990's with two friends from other countries.  One was European, one was Subcontinental Indian.  They had records there that both my friends were amazed existed.

    I doubt anyone at the records department at wherever will do anything without a file number and a written request accompanied by a check to purchase the record.
