Question:

Can I change my FAFSA???

Earlier this year I filed my FAFSA but I didn't know that I was considered a independent because I will have a child by the time school starts and I was told that I am considered a independent because of that. Well I went to refile my FAFSA or change it to independent, but it won't allow me to change from dependent to independent. I filed for the 2008-2009 school year so does this mean that I am going to have to wait until the 2009-2010 school year? Is there anyway that I can get FAFSA as a independent so I can start school in August or January??

  1. The best thing for you to do is go to your schools fin aid office and tell them you were pregnant and didn't read the instructions carefully and made a mistake.  (I would also bring a copy of your kids birth certificate with you as proof if you've had him already.  If you haven't wear an article of clothing that screams maternity.) See if they will change it (along with "number of people in the household" for you.   However, this may be a mistake you will have to live with until next year when you file again.

I have known some fin aid directors to allow the "number in household" to include the unborn baby, but NOT to use a new unborn baby change a persons dependency status.  Be very nice, be very gracious, and admit you didn't realize this.

You don't have to be independent to start school in August or January.  Lots of folks who are dependents go to school.
