  1. I did exactly that.  I was a Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineer for 10 years, then switched over to Robotics /  Simulation for a year, and then all of a sudden I was categorized as an IT person.  This led me to many IT jobs and I have matured into a decent software engineer who simulates, what else, manufacturing and mechanical systems.    Initially, my pay scale jumped well from the common 2 - 5 % range per year as a M.E., to 12 - 17 % a year as an IT.  But since about 5 years ago I plateaued  around 0 - 2%.  So I changed companies (twice) which helped me jump back up to that 10 - 15 % range.  So - take full advantage of your Me/Ma Engineering skills when going to the IT sector.

  2. Sure, but you will need to take computer classes and get certifications.  You could do it in probably 6 months to a year.

  3. You can always switch careers if you're willing to get the required education and/or training. For information technology, I would suggest Cisco certifications. They are really the leaders in training for this industry. If you need more info go to the Cisco learning network and community forum: https://cisco.hosted.jivesoftware.com/in...

  4. yes you can but personally I wouldn't

There must be thousands of IT experts out there so when you finish your payrate will be dragged down by the numbers trying for work

If you've got a Manufacturing Degree you can moveinto management sooner with a career with a better future
