Question:

Can I claim hardship superannuation tax back at tax time?

A friend claimed a portion of their superannuation due to hardship and paid almost $2500 in tax. As they have only worked 16 weeks of this financial year, are they eligible to claim that tax back in July 2008? Can't find it anywhere on websites and the number is difficult to get through to.

cheers!

  1. Yes that $2500 amount would be part of their "tax credit" in the tax return - but the "portion of superannuation due to hardship" is also part of their "assessable income" that needs to be included in their tax return on top of their wages for the 16 weeks work.

The trustee of the Superfund should send your friend something that looks similar to a "Group Certificate". That's how your friend know what figures to put into his/her tax return and in which boxes.
