I'm thinking of making a chopper bicycle from an old mountain bike (its only a few years old with no rust).

Im going to follow the instructions at

http://www.instructables.com/id/Mountain-Lion-Chopper-Bicycle/

i was wondering if it were possible for me to use a cold weld epoxy like the ones used to fix cracks in engine blocks, like the ones here:

http://jbweld.net/products/index.php

instead of using a welder.to put the frame back together.and modify the front fork. I have everything but the welder, so, can someone tell me if a cold weld would be safe.

Thanks =]

  1. nooo just have someone arc weld it for you.  jb weld and other epoxy type stuff sucks sometimes.

  2. J-B Weld would not do it.  It doesn't hold up with force.

  3. i dont know try it

  4. No, no, no!

    Epoxy has a fair amount of tensile strength, but very little shear strength.  The way shear stresses are placed on a bicycle frame this will not work, and will be dangerous.

  5. cold weld is fine for fixing crack & fractures but not holding parts together. if your are looking for the cheapest possible weld i would go with some solder & a propane torch. but if you really want it done right &cheap take it to a car shop that fixes mufflers & exhaust systems. they should be able to do a halfass weld. anything less would be putting your safety at risk.

    you dont want a cheap non-professional weld to blow out on you while riding down hill

    makes for a painfull day... good luck
