I have 2 rabbits and they're herbavors so their waste is plant based. Plus, the litter is made from groung corn cobs and their bedding is made from recycled newspaper. I clean their cage every week and that is alot of trash I am making so I was wondering if it could be composted instead. Whenever I clean it though, it smells really bad and the acid from the pee burns the plastic litter box over time and I have to get a new one every year. So maybe it isn't compostable after all. But then again, It could help break down the other stuff. But what if it kills the plants I will be giving the compost to in the future? I am really torn weather I should compost it or not but I really would like to if I can. So, can i compost bunny litter or no?

  1. Gosh, it's great stuff, but you are right, a bit high in nitrogen.  The corncobs and newspaper are the carbon to offset the nitrogen.  If you have grass clippings, kitchen fruit and vegetable waste and dry leaves, that can all be added to your compost.  Remember the compost has to heat before you can start turning it.  Plus it needs to be moist.  You might want to read up on it first.

I had rabbits and the bunny balls and litter were plowed directly into the garden soil about a two months before planting.  By mixing with the soil, I allowed the material to compost naturally within the soil, it's called sheet composting.  It was wonderful soil and great crops.  No more bunnies and I do miss the bunny balls but not that ammonia smell of the urine........phew!
