  1. No you cannot on the Wii. You normally can get away with it on other consumer electronics devices however the Wii is configured to only output video over the "yellow" composite connection and audio over the "red and white" audio connections. You cannot change this.

However, do not listen to the first posted. Upgrading the Wii's cables will make a large difference in picture quality. First of all, contrary to what he posted, the Wii DOES support 480p and this can only be done over component cables. In addition, figuring your LCD is widescreen, widescreen is also only supported over component connections on the Wii. Not only that but you will get a general improvement in video quality due to the way component video keeps the "components" of the video signal separate all the way to the TV.

You don't need to spend a fortune for a component video cable. There are a number of cheaper options. Here is however, one of the cheapest:

Good luck and enjoy your console!

  2. No, you cannot/should not use composite video RCA cables to connect the Wii to your TV.

Use composite cables to connect it the composite input on your TV.  That is, yellow cable - yellow jack; red - red, white - white.  Yellow is the video.

Wii is not HD.  Don't bother upgrading to component cables because they're expensive and designed for 480 progressive and HD signals.  The Wii is visually inferior to the other systems on the market, and video quality won't be significantly better using component cables.

If the TV has component jacks, it will have composite, as well.

    Hope this helps.

--Additionally-- if you want to spend about $80 on a high-end set of Monster THX certified component cables, you'll get a big improvement in color saturation and reduction in pixelation due to EM interference.
