Question:

Can I connect a subwoofer to my TV to boost the bass that I'm unable to get from the TV speakers alone?

I have a Mitsubishi 65" DLP. Unfortunately, my Philips 2.1 surround system doesn't have appropriate aux audio options for my HD DVD player, so I prefer to just use the HDMI transferred audio through my TV's speakers.

Am I able to simply hook-up a subwoofer to my TV to improve the bass?

  1. there is a way but its not through your tv.. most subs have 2 ways to be hooked up. I gather neither your tv or sound system have (low level) rca pre out jacks. The second way it for you to hook your speaker wire(left and right) from your sound systen to the (high level) IN on the sub. then speaker wire from the (high level )OUT to your speaker and ajust the crossover accordingly. some times your dvd player might have a pre-out for the sub that you could use. I would think that your 2.1 system would sound better than your mitsubishi tv speakers.

  2. Usually no.  Unless the TV has a sub out, which is doubtful.  Most subs need an amplifier to power it.  There are subs that are powered, but you still need the appropriate output from the tv.

  3. It depends on the connections your TV, surround system (receiver?), and subwoofer.  But you should be able to remedy the situation where you can utilize your sub to augment the bass of your TV speakers pretty easily.  Email me and we'll go through the connections you have and I'll walk you through it.
