Can I connect my PS3 to an AV receiver using just an HDMI?

I am looking to buy an Onkyo TXSR505 AV Receiver to get surround sound from my PS3. This receiver comes with an 'HDMI interface'. The store tells me I have to also connect the receiver to my PS3 using an optical cable in addition to the HDMI as PS3 don't output audio through the HDMI. Is this true? If so, what's the point of the HDMI interface?

  1. nope.

txsr505 is not able to process audio on hdmi.

make sure you hookup an audio cable in conjuction with your hdmi.

    optical is preffered.

but if you're not very particular with surround sound, then you can get by with rca (red and white composite).

with your ps3, some units which are not equipped with the most recent firmware update may not be able to output dolby tru-hd to other equipments like the receiver. it's better to ask sony about that stuff anyway.

    ;)

  2. Onkyo 505 is not a HDMI repeater receiver, you can't use just an HDMI for both audio and video. If you like Onkyo, you should buy 605 ( around $350 ) this receiver let you connect only HDMI 1.3a to get surround sound even some new audio HD formats.

  3. It should output audio...

If it doesn't, the HDMI still allows it to output full 1080p definition.

You either cant output sound, they're trying to scam you to buy another cable, or they're foreign and have no idea what they're talking about.

(I've had a bit of trouble with foreign help, the lack of communication means they know virtually nothing but whats in the manuals, and even then...)
