We recently tried to change our phone number and when through some major hassles. We switched back to keep our phone number because of our kids and how we remember our phone numbers as kids.

That got me thinking about if I could somehow copyright the phone number.

  1. No you can't copyright a phone number; copyright laws "protects original works of authorship..." and you are not the "original author or creator" of numbers or a any number combination.

Not even the telephone company can do that because numbers and the alphabet has no copyright. What they own is the service and the account the number represent but they don't really own the number itself (your very same number is used in other areas using a different area code). Your company is given those numbers based on availability and area of service but they don't "own" the number and nobody does, but they have the right to use it since they got it first.

Now with portability laws you can take your number from one company to another but you still don't "own" the number, you are just given priority for being the current user (before you probably your number had several previous users and after you it will be reassigned).

You just were lucky they didn't give the number to someone else.

  2. It's just a phone number..Your kids are smart enough to remember a new number if given the chance.

  3. No you don't own the number the phone company does.

  4. No you can't because legally speaking, the number isn't yours, it is owned by the phone company, and you just rent the line.

  5. You can't bc it belongs to the phone company... unless you own your own phone company and then port the number to it you basically own it... but whats the point lol

  6. no...you can now own a phone number, the phone company who issued you the number owns the number!!
