Can I cover my electric stove burner pans with aluminum foil to protect them during and after cooking?

We have had the foil around the pans for quite some time, but yesterday it exploded, after it cool we took it apart and the element was almost completely severed, so I'm assuming that the foil expanded and touch the element, we have to replace the stove top coil that the pots and pans sit on.

Are there any other recommended options aside from foil? what do the manufactors recommend? Maybe ceramic or something non-conductive.
