Question:

Can I create a food bowl using ceramic bisque without firing it in a kiln?

Hi. I would like to create some pet dishes to give as gifts using ceramic bisque. If I paint only the outside of the dish using non-toxic paints and glazes using Pebeo Porcelain 150 products, leave the inside untouched and bake it in my oven as per instructions on the label, should this be safe for an animal? I WILL NOT glaze/paint the inside. If ceramic bisque is left untouched, is it safe to consume off of? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

  1. To be completely safe, maybe you could embed a plastic bowl inside after it's baked, or a metal bowl before it's baked.

  2. Because the glazes you want to use are non-toxic, it would be perfectly safe to use them on the inside of the dishes.

The point of glazing is to make the ceramic non-porous - bisque is full of tiny surface pits and holes, which would very soon become contaminated with the pet food/drink the bowl is used for.

So put glaze on the insides, too, to make an easily cleaned waterproof surface. Plain clear glaze would do. Or do as the other answer suggests - use the ceramic as an outer for appearance, with a plastic or metal liner for the actual food.
