I am a beginner and want to crochet a blanket but don't want to make the type with a little squares all sewn together, just as one big piece.

  1. Yes, crochet is that versatile.  You can do any stitch big enough for a one piece blanket.  If you're talking about the granny square stitch, I'm actually working on on right now.  I like to use two strands of yarn at the same time.  I'm using an N hook with two strands of Red Heart Super Saver.  It starts really fast, but when it gets really big, each side takes longer and longer because it IS getting longer and longer.

  2. go to www.crochetpatterncentral.com  This is my favorite website for crochet patterns.  I have made MANY things from this website.  There are many options out there for One piece afghans, i've made both one piece, and the ones where you have to sew the squares together and i've noticed that they both have alot of pros and cons, it seems to me when you make the ones w/the lil squares it seems like you work FOREVER and never get anywhere, and although making it in one piece seems to work faster, it gets very difficult to handle when it gets bigger. so take all this into consideration when you begin your afghan!  have fun!!!  feel free to email if you need anymore help...omarandsteph@gmail.com GOod Luck!!!!

  3. Yes, you can. When you start off, you crochet a certain number of links,  then turn the blanket around and keep crocheting the same pattern over and over. Each time you get to the end, turn the blanket around and go back the way you came. In order for the blanket to get larger you'll need to put one or two add'l loops on the end before you go back the other way.  Usually stores like Walmart has free beginners directions to help you make blankets and scarfs.
