Can I cut out a stud in order to place an outlet box in the same space?

I need to move an outlet box over a few inches so that it's placement will be centered between two mirrors in a bathroom that we're remodeling. Unfortunately, there's a stud in the exact place I want. Can I cut out that part of the stud and put the outlet box there?

  1. You can try using a shallow electrical box that does not require you to cut the stud completely, only to the depth of the box; or you can cut the stud, install the box and nail 2x4 supports on either side of the box to the upper and lower ends of the stud that was cut. That should keep it from moving.

  2. that is a good question. i had the same question about a year ago. I got no answers so i just went ahead and did it anyways and Ive had no problems with my decision.

  3. What will you attach the box to? If you remove the wallboard then you can install another stud to one side or the other, but don't just cut out a piece and leave it that way, you need something solid to attach to. Cut out the drywall board 16'' to the left and 16'' to the right of the stud that is in your way, this should put you dead center of a stud on either side, use a saws all and remove the stud you don't want and toe nail another one in where you want it. it depends on what box you are using for an outlet. You want it center so allow for which side you are using.

  4. Not a good idea to cut out part of a stud...why not place the outlet box on the side of the stud...putting a shim of some sort alongside the stud of the necessary thickness to place the outlet where you want it....
