Can I dig up a root of a large elm tree without killing the tree?

I have a rather large elm tree that borders my property. At this time one of it's large roots is busting up my driveway. I don't wish to kill the tree, but I also need to stop the damage. Can I destroy 1 root without killing the tree?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  1. im sorry but i have nothing to answer this question

  2. I'm not sure, sorry. :(

  3. It is unlikely to kill the entire tree since there will be numerous branch roots extending from the root.  It could show some damaged section of the tree if the other roots are in adverse conditions (under another driveway)!

You have little choice of removing the root if it is breaking your drive way!  Unfortunately, people sometimes forgets just how big that three or four foot sapling will become when it matures!

    Chop the root!
