Question:

Can I dispute an EZ-Pass Ticket Violation if it belongs to somebody else?

I used my friend's EZ-Pass at the George Washington Bridge (GWB), but we are not sure whether it was detected because when crossing the WhiteStone Bridge we had to put it further to the middle to get the gate opened (there is no gate at the GWB).

If I receive a ticket, can I dispute it by saying that I was using an EZ-Pass that was not detected. But is it a problem that the EZ-Pass used belonged to my friend (i.e., it is registered to a different car)?

  1. Like you said....EZ passes are assigned to specific vehicles....meaning..you can't pass them around to anyone you want.

If you go telling someone that you were using someone else's EZ pass..then you might get more than a ticket.

Just pay the ticket...and in the future...go and get your own EZ pass....that way...you're covered.

  2. If the EZ pass wasn't detected and you drove through, there was a picture taken of the rear of your vehicle showing your tag (that is how they find violators). They will know that you were using a pass that wasn't registered to your car. If they are going to give a violation, you will receive it in the mail. You can try to dispute it, but don't be surprised if you lose! You can write what happened at the bottom of the ticket but someone has to actually READ what you write and I don't think they do! A friend of mine received a violation and tried to dispute it (he had a pretty good case too) and they wouldn't budge. If you do get a violation, pay it right away (I think he said it was only about $20 or less) cause they start tacking on fees if you don't. Good luck with this.

  3. Pay the ticket.  You are guilty.  The EZ pass is registered to a certain vehicle.

They probably hear that excuse a hundred times a day.
