I get my A level results tomorrow and originally intended to do law at university. I now don't think I'll get the grades I need so I'm looking at other options.

I think I would enjoy doing philosophy but my question is would I, having achieved a 2.1/2.2 in my philosophy, then be able to do a masters in law?

I am in the UK BTW.

Apologies if I didn't word this very well I'm very nervous.

  1. The first answer came from Canada. Now here is one from the US. I can tell you our situation, and you can call any university law program to confirm whether or not the situation is similar in the UK.

Here in the US a first course in philosophy is considered ideal preparation for law school. We have law schools as separate professional schools; they give the J.D. degree, after a three year course of study. So students entering their BA course must find a major other than law, and then go to law school after completing their BA course.

Philosophy is ideal because (1) the criminal law grows directly out of the moral and ethical discriminations in society, so the study of moral philosophy prepares the student to be very discerning in that area of law; (2) legal reasoning is a process of arguing by analogy to prior cases, so the study of logic and language is perfect preparation for legal reasning; (3) the law itself is a very philosophical subject, and the theories of law and judicial processes (jurisprudence) is a branch of philosophy you will have to study in law school, so a preliminary study of the philosophies of law and the state will prepare you directly for this area.

And of course, philosophy is a heck of a lot of fun!
