Can I do a deed poll to change of name when I am an EU citizen with residence in the UK?

Question

Can I change my name trough a deed poll in the Uk , or do I need to go through the system in my country of citizenship?

And where can I register a deed ...do I have to do it in court..?

Also I am going to need a new passport soon, so I am going to apply for an EU passport (standard for German citizens living abroad) would they recognize a change of name that was registered here ?

Im sorry but i smell a rat here why do you want to change your name when you come and live here ??

It just seems a bit of a strange thing to want to do unless you have something to hide

they would need original documents when applying for passport and the deed poll one and birth cert.  Any one whom you were changing your old name to your deed name would ask for the new deed poll letter to be sent to them as well as an original copy of your birth cert

There are many on the internet where you can buy them.

I changed mine along with my partner as we didn't want to use his fathers surname, we have used his nan's maiden name instead. But any surname you want as long as its nothing rude or can be mistaken for royalty etc. can be used....you could even have lord, lady, baron, baroness if you wished!

Ok, deed polls are a common law thing and of course only the German authorities can approve a name change when you are German. And the Germans are very, very strict concerning this but your reasoning might be sufficient. Go to the German Embassy, explain the situation and they might help you. But again, you won't be able to change your name in the UK when you are not British, should the Brits do this anyway, this would be an illegal action against German sovereignty and it could be even construed as "Urkundenfälschung" after the German penal code.
