Can I do my art GCSE at home?

My mum is a qualified art teacher and has been for along time, however she is leaving school to work in her studio full-time. My mum offered to tutor me at home so I could do my art GCSE out of school. I liked this idea but when she rang AQA they said that art and design could not be done in home tutoring because the fast amount of coursework required must be varified to be yours by the school. Are there other boards that allow it? Could it be varified by my art teacher at school? Could i do supervised course work in a night school dispite am younger than the average age for GCSE's? Are there any ways round this?

  1. I know of home educated kids in the UK that have done GCSEs via distance learning and through local further ed colleges. Your mum could try approaching some local FE colleges. She could also contact Education Otherwise at www.education-otherwise.org as they know plenty about home education and GCSEs.

    Good luck!

  2. I guess my question is, why do you want to do it? You can get into art college with a good portfolio if that's what you want to do, the GCSE is, like the O Level before it, just a bit of paper that nobody is going to take very seriously. You might be better off spending the time learning technique, particularly if your mum can help.
