Can I do this just by buying a wireless router and setting it up?

I want to set up my house so that I can access the Internet on my iPod touch at home, when I get it sometime in late April.

So, can I just buy a wireless router, unplug everything from my cable modem, and then plug all the stuff back in to the wireless router?

Sorry, I don't know how hooking up a wireless router for your home works, or if it is even possible like this.

Will I have to get more cables because I will need both my cable modem and the router hooked up? Or can I just unplug my cable modem?

Thanks.
